What is the difference between the soul and spirit of man?

Let's see how God defines the word "soul". The Hebrew word nephesh, is translated as "soul" in most English Bibles. It actually has a meaning closer to "living being". Nephesh was rendered in the Septuagint as ψυχή; (psūchê), the Greek word for soul. The New Testament also uses the word ψυχή, but with the Hebrew meaning and not the Greek. So there is is when God breathed in the man He had created out of the earth [red clay] man became a living being.

Even animals are souls - living beings according to scripture.

Genesis 6:17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is THE BREATH OF LIFE, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.

Genesis 6:21-22: And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: all in whose nostrils was THE BREATH OF LIFE, of all that was in the dry land, died.

So animals were also Nephesh - living beings in whom was the breath of life.

Notice:

La 3:25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul - living beings that seek Him.

Ezekiel 18:4: Behold, all souls - living beings are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sins, it shall die.

Ezekiel 18:20: The soul that sins, it shall die.

So from all this we see that God's definition in His revelation for the world soul - hephesh is a living being, and that it can apply to animals as well as human beings who are if alive obviously living beings.

Notice:

Psalm 104:29: You hide Your face, they are troubled: You take away their breath, they die, and return to their dust.

Psalm 146:4: His breath goes forth, he returns to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

Psalm 150:6: Let every thing that has breath praise YHVH - Yehovah. Halal Yah - Praise you Yehovah.

Here is the clincher:

Eccl:3:19: For that which befalls the sons of men befalls beasts; even one thing befalls them: as the one dies, so dies the other; yea, they have all ONE BREATH; so that a man has no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.

Notice this speaking about a future resurrection.

Ezekiel 37:5-10: Thus says YHVH - Yehovah - LORD GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live: And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put BREATH in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am YHVH - Yehovah. And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no BREATH in them. Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus says YHVH - Yehovah; Come from the four winds, O BREATH, and BREATHE upon these slain, that they may live. So I prophesied as he commanded me, and THE BREATH came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.

That is how God defines the breath of life from His revelation to us!

Halal Yah - Praise God who has given each of us the breath of life in order that we may life out our lives in honor to His great name YHVH - Yehovah, and to the name of His beloved son Yehoshua, His anointed one who is now seated at His right hand ready to come down and take his place on the throne of his father David at Zion. May that day soon come!
