Question: "What does it mean to work out salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12)"
This is an answer I gave to S. Michael Houdmann: You have given an excellent answer and I quote the end of your text: "Obedience and submission to the God we revere and respect is our "reasonable service" (Romans 12:1-2) and brings great joy. Psalm 2:11 sums it up perfectly: "Serve Yehovah with fear and rejoice with trembling." We work out our salvation by going to the very source of our salvation - the word of Yehovah - wherein we renew our hearts and minds (Romans 12:1-2), coming into His presence with a spirit of reverence and awe."
What you have said is true about approaching God - Yehovah in a spirit of reverence and awe we are working out our salvation, but the next few verses gets down to what Paul is emphasizing!
Philippians 2:12-16: Wherefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That you may be blameless and sincere, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom you shine as lights in the world; HOLDING FORTH THE WORD OF LIFE [THE GOOD NEWS MESSAGE ABOUT THE COMING KINGDOM OF GOD AND THE THINGS ABOUT THE LORD JESUS}.
NOTICE: Acts 8: 5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached the Messiah unto them..... and what did he preach in order for them to be baptized?
Answer: Acts 8:12:
"BUT WHEN THEY BELIEVED PHILIP PREACHING THE THINGS CONSERVING THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND THE NAME OF JESUS THE MESSIAH, THEY WERE BAPTIZED, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN."
That is what it means for us to hold forth the WORD OF LIFE! And if we seek first the kingship/kingdom of God - Matthew 6:33, and hold forth the saving words of life we shall never have to worry about losing our salvation!
Are you holding forth the WORD OF LIFE before all!
